John Freida: 3 day straight

I recently purchased the Allure Summer beauty box, and one of the products was John Frieda 3-day straight spray. I have been wanting to try this since it came out; all of the reviews in Allure and Lucky have been stellar. The Allure editors used the word "shocking" to describe it, so I knew it must be pretty different than other straightening products.

And let me tell you, it is certainly badA. I can get my hair stick straight, but it takes a good deal of flat ironing in very small sections, which after time can be damaging. I have tried different smoothing products, and they work well but they do not last longer than a day. This stuff? It's unreal.

Let's go through my collage below, shall we? Let me go ahead and note that the instructions state clearly that this is designed for use with the flat iron, so you will not get 3 days of straight hair without the flat iron. Also, they mention you may have to touch up on day 2 and 3, and that if you shower, obviously the effects are gone. This is not a permanent styling like Keratin treatments, etc (which I'm starting to hear that Brazilian stuff is REALLY bad for you, so any of you doing it might want to research and/or stop doing it). Anyway, continuing on...so as you can see, right out of the shower my hair is pretty messy and wavy. The instructions recommend 7-15 sprays, so I started on the low end with about 7 or 8. I think I could have/should have done more, but 8 still did the job. Following blow dry, it was actually pretty straight. Usually it is much wavier at this point. Then came the flat iron; day one flat iron was probably the straightest I've gotten my hair outside of a salon. I didn't have to go over pieces over and over either, just one swipe did the job. If you have curlier/coarser hair, you may have to go in smaller sections, but you still shouldn't have to run over each section numerous times.

Day 2, right out of bed I had some flips and curves around the bottom of my hair, but this is much, MUCH straighter than my hair normally is right from bed. Usually it looks like a messy rat nest, to be honest. I added a little dry shampoo to my bangs because they have a tendency to get oily, and then touched up the bottom with the iron. I didn't have to do anything to the back. Again, the instructions note that you may have touch-ups, so my experience was normal. You can see in the pics that it definitely returned day 1 condition on day 2. It stayed like this all day, and I went out IN THE RAIN folks. Full on 95 degree 100% humidity Baton Rouge, and my hair stayed straight as a board. Unreal.  Then I went to yoga class, where the A/C was apparently broken, and I proceeded to sweat my butt off. I wanted to see how it really held up for 3 days, so I took a shower with a shower cap to avoid wetting my hair. Day 3 (today) I'm in a ponytail, mostly because my roots are just too oily and dirty for dry shampoo to help. But do you see my ponytail? SO STRAIGHT! And there is NO frizz in my hair. Not a bit. I'm very pleased with this product. I think that if I had even longer hair, it would be even better!!

Now for the potential downsides. I'm not sure how well this would work on shorter hair. I think it's designed for medium and long hair. As you can see, I have medium length hair, so it worked well. Also, for people prone to oily hair, you might not make day 3. As I mentioned, I wouldn't have made it, even if I had skipped yoga on day 2. 

In general the positives greatly outweigh the negatives, and it's only $9.99 at drugstores. I HIGHLY recommend!

Tuesday....review!

The links were kinda dull this week, so I am going to review a product instead: L'Oreal EverPure Moisture Deep Restorative Masque.

I bought this a few weeks ago for two reasons: 1) I had just dyed my hair a lighter shade of blond for the summer, so needed a protective product and 2) it's summer, and the sun wreaks havoc on my hair. I already use the EverPure line of shampoo and conditioner (LOVE IT), so I felt certain this product would not disappoint. I was right! It's like body butter for your hair...super thick and straight up luxurious. The rosemary mint smells great, even T (the husband) likes it. I don't recommend using it too often unless you have extremely dry hair though or your hair might get weighed down. I use it about once every two weeks, concentrating on the ends, and it leaves my hair silky smooth. My sweet 4 year-old nephew visited this weekend, and at one point I bent down to help him tie his shoe...he touched my hair and said "Aunt Court-court, your hair is so soft" If that's not a seal of approval folks, I don't know what is!

You can find this at any drugstore. I bought it at Walgreens (I think) for $8.99.

Help me choose!

Gals I am going to a Mardi Gras ball in two weeks. After 6 years in Louisiana I am FINALLY getting around to checking this off my list. It's not a big fancy one like the ones in NOLA, but it's definitely a good one for Baton Rouge! :) And I never, repeat NEVER, get  the chance to be dressed up or anything. 99% of my time is spent in gym clothes and lounge-wear these days...needless to say, I'm pumped.

So this is a pic of me and T from 2007 at my sister's debutant ball in the dress that I will wear. Cute dress, but I gotta say it's not one of my most outstanding hair and makeup moments. Very plain. I would like to actually look like I am attending a ball from the neck up this time. I am not going for an updo...T is not a huge fan, and it costs more at the salon to get an updo. It needs to be a style that can survive though. I get it styled at noon, but the ball isn't til evening, and I will be outside for a parade at some point as well So...what say you? Let me know in the comments what you think. If you can't see my profile pic, my hair is longer now than in 2007...about to my collarbone.

Bring some shine into your life (or at least your hair)

So maybe it's winter, maybe it's me, but I've noticed my hair has been looking super dull lately. It's no secret that I color my hair, but I'm on hiatus until my stylist comes off maternity leave (maybe. I'm not sure I can make it that long, but I'm going to try). However, yesterday in Walgreens I came upon this product:

I am not new to the world of glazes; I tried John Freida a few years ago. That brand worked pretty well as far as shine goes, but didn't smell very good, the texture was more of a gel than anything else, and after using my hair was somewhat "squeaky" if you know what I mean. I hadn't used anything in a long time, so I thought about trying this. It was $6.99 ($6.00 at drugstore.com) for 4 oz, but that's not too bad for Aveeno. I have tried Aveeno active naturals shampoo without much success, but I was willing to give it a shot.

I'm glad I did, because so far I really like it. You just apply it post shampoo & conditioner in the shower, let it set 2-3 min, and rinse. Easy! Shine example to the right taken with my camera phone.

I didn't use any products post shower and didn't apply any heat tools other than the hair dryer and a round brush to try and make it look better. Pretty good, huh? Another bonus is the light and flowery scent (hence the "active naturals" I suppose). Also, it's a cream, so it goes on your hair easily in the shower, just like a conditioner would. When I combed through my hair I had zero tangles, which my expensive conditioner can't even do, giving it BIG points in my book as well. The only concern is there didn't seem to be many available on the shelves; I don't know if this is a new product Aveeno is marketing, or one that isn't doing well. I guess I'll have to wait and see on that.

The goal is to help extend color, not totally replace having your hair colored, and at first glance it seems to do the trick. I will report back if it washes out tomorrow, but otherwise I give this product a 4 out of 5.

Update on Pantene....

So a few weeks ago I posted about Pantene showing some signs of improving their product line. Feel free to review HERE. I have updates. They are sad updates. I tried a few days or so each of the Medium-Thick Frizzy to Smooth Shampoo and the Color Preserve Shine Shampoo and Color Preserve Shine Conditioner.

I give the Color preserve shine about a 3 on a scale of 1 to 10. While it DID make my hair appear shiny, the texture was way out of whack. It felt stripped down and squeaky, if that makes any sense. It only took about 4 days of use for me to stop using this one. I started to get nervous of breakage. So, won't be buying this again.

The Medium-thick shampoo I will rate a little higher at about a 6. When I blow dried my hair it was pretty dang straight without much effort. But again, something was just not right with the texture and shine. Now instead of being squeaky and shiny, it's kinda dull. It just doesn't FEEL right, you know what I mean? And no amount of conditioner helped. So, I doubt I purchase this again. I may keep it around to use as emergency backup shampoo, but otherwise I'm going back to my expensive Brocato brand.

Kinda bums me out! I was all excited for a cheaper shampoo option. HOWEVER, the styling cream I previously mentioned still works great. So maybe for now Pantene is getting it right with the products but isn't quite there with the shampoo.

Selenium

Y'all! Check out THIS POST from Amber Katz at Beauty Blogging Junkie about a supplement to help hair growth! She started taking selenium supplements and her hair grew 3-4 inches since August. What!? That's awesome!

I'm trying this. The supplements I have tried in the past (i.e. fish oil which is supposed to be good for hair, skin, and nails) made my skin FREAK THE F OUT. So. I will let you know how it goes for me!

Well look at Pantene. Steppin it's game up...

I'm pretty sure I remember when Pantene got big in the late 1980s. They've been around forever, but I remember buying Pantene with the gold cap thinking I was all hot shiz. The two-in-one shampoo/conditioner. Anyone else? And it has that smell that is just...Pantene. And then it just wasn't working that great, and I moved on to better shampoos...Well. Ladies, Pantene has stepped their game up.

First of all, it has won one of Allure's Breakthrough innovations for 2010...specifically, the Pantene Pro-V Fine Hair Solutions Flat to Volume Shampoo and Medium-Thick Hair Solutions Frizzy to Smooth Shampoo. Winning a breakthrough award is kinda maja, because the Allure editors started with 150 submissions, cut that to 63 contenders, and ended with 12. Only 12. And it has to be something new, something novel. No other shampoos made the cut, and Allure is not one to shy away from the expensive stuff. So, pretty good start...especially for a drug store brand!

Here's how it works. The peeps at Pantene figured out that hair really can be separated into 4 groups: fine, medium/thick, curly, and color/chemical treated. So all the products are designed and separated into these 4 groups, with the intent of working on this hair TYPE. They also have a "restore healthy lengths" and "Original" line, but I don't know much about that. I guess other shampoo companies do this, but it's not as obvious. Most bottles don't say "Fine hair" or "Thick hair" specifically. I think that they should, and why it's 2010 and this is JUST now occurring to beauty product developers, I don't know.

Now. I have not tried the shampoo...YET. I plan to, especially after the Allure shout out. My Brocato shampoo is awesome..but it's $20+ a bottle (I KNOOOOWWW...) This stuff is $7. So much better on my wallet.

I HAVE tried the Medium to Thick Straighten and Smooth Creme, and I really, really like it. It makes my hair straight as a board, and it STAYS that way. I have naturally wavy hair, so if all I do is blow dry it just looks straight. If I flat-iron it does NOT frizz, even in humidity, and it stays basically two days. If my bangs didn't get so grease-tastic I could go without washing. A little goes a long way, so you don't need to overdo it or your hair could feel kinda weighed down. They have a smooth/straight creme for fine hair, so as the bottle says, don't use it if your hair isn't medium/thick. It's only $5.99. Seriously, I spend over $6 on a glass of wine at a restaurant...this is nothing compared to most product costs.

There really are a bunch of new, interesting products from Pantene I want to try. There are other styling products I think would work great with my hair...and thanks to the new labeling I don't really have to wonder "Does this work for my hair type?" Cause it's WRITTEN ON THE BOTTLE. Everything is so inexpensive as well, which makes me feel better about tossing it if it doesn't work out. I never try the high end stuff cause I hate to waste the money. But I'll be testing a good bit of this line.

Pantene has some neato stuff on their site to help you out. First, there is a little tutorial to help you pick what works best for you (since I have both colored AND medium hair, it may be hard to choose) HERE. Review: John Frieda Frizz-Ease Smooth Start Repairing Shampoo and Conditioner

I got a full size bottle of John Frieda Frizz-Ease Smooth Start Repairing shampoo and conditioner in my Allure beauty bag (paid for myself). I am now starting to see it and the hydrating version in the drugstores, so I thought I would review it for you.

Overall, I liked this shampoo and conditioner. I've been using it during my weeks in Nashville, because the water up there is a bit harder than the uber-soft swamp water in Baton Rouge. It made my hair very soft and easy to blow dry. I didn't try to style it super straight or super curly. I don't think the style would hold well due to my hair being so soft, so I just let it be semi-straight/semi-wavy. I haven't tried it when it was raining, but I have when it's HOT (900 degrees HOT) outside AND I walked to work. My hair was still in good shape by work and remained so throughout the day. I put the conditioner mostly on the ends and avoided my scalp, and it made the ends feel very smooth. The one thing I noticed the first day was that the shampoo made my bangs difficult to style and VERY flat. I had to texturize them a bit with dry shampoo to keep them from matting to my forehead. Day two I tried to keep it out of my bangs, but this is difficult since most of the time my bangs are the ONLY part of my hair that get greasy and thus need washing. Alternative would be to use a small amt of different shampoo on bangs, but that's kinda a pain. The best part of this shampoo came the next day. When I woke up to go to the gym, it was STILL smooth and fairly decent looking. This is so not the norm for me...usually when I wake up my hair is all over the place. I don't know if I could have made it the whole day without washing it, but I definitely could have made it at least half the day. If my hair was super long I bet I could have gone all day without washing.

I would recommend this product if you have slightly longer hair that is medium to thick. I think it would just cause fine, short hair to flatten into nothing (like it did with my bangs). Overall, it does what it claims: Keeps hair smooth, blocks frizz, and helps repair split ends. If you are going to try some major style following use be warned that it may not hold. If you are just wearing it down, straight, etc though you should be fine. In Baton Rouge (soft water) I am very careful to keep it out of my bangs and avoid conditioner on the roots.

Matrix Biolage Delicate Care Organic Certified Oil

Remember VO5 Hot Oil from back in the 80s and 90s? Well, one of the products I got in my Allure beauty bag is a bit of a throwback to that...Biolage Delicate Care Organic Certified Oil. It is designed to preserve colored hair and repair sun and other damage. You can put it on before shampooing, like I did, or you can put it on after home coloring (Coco, you may want to test it out!). I also found this blog review The Mourning Reviews, where the author discusses using it as a touch-up for shine. I don't know about this...it's straight oil so I can see adding it to dry hair and things going awry!

Here are the steps for pre-shampoo use:
1. Apply to dry hair before shampooing from mid length to ends. I didn't really soak my hair, I just put enough to make it look a little damp.

2. Apply heat for 5-10 min. I just ran the hair dryer over it for about 5 min.
3. Shampoo, condition, and style as usual. My end pic is below. I will say that I used my straightener, so this is not the result after just blow drying.

 In general, my hair does feel pretty smooth and soft, but not much more than using a thick conditioner. It's not any shiner than normal. Perhaps a longer heat treatment or starting with more damage would show a greater difference. I do like the product, and will probably use this whole bottle, but I doubt I go searching for it in the salons. From the prices I see online, it runs as high as $25 for this little 1.7 oz bottle. However, I used the tiniest amount today, so I can see this stuff lasting ages.

Disclosure: I bought this myself. I wasn't paid to review this, but if anyone out there wants to give me a job reviewing beauty swag I'd be glad to do it.

My sister has some awesome hair.

So my sister has some pretty awesome hair. It's very long, naturally pretty auburn, and lately I've become obsessed with it. So I thought I would ask her how she styles it and keeps it looking so damn healthy and shiny, because I plan on trying to grow mine out as well. Please reference exhibit A and B below. Sorry for the pic quality! I tried not to make them too fuzzy.

Here's her rundown. I've put the big stuff in bold:
"sooo my hair...really i've just almost completely quit drying it...i dry it maybe once or twice a week. I think it has a lot to do with the cut, i just told her I wanted layers, so my hair had movement and that I wanted my bangs short to swoop across my forehead...when i do dry it i try not to straighten it too much and the pic i just have it bobby pins criss crossed like middle back on one side.
when its wavy...yours is probably easier because yours is more naturally wavy than mine. but i just get outta the shower and spray a little bit of this "beach wavy" spray i have...i can't remember what brand it is but it's blue. then i twist both sides, just a big chunk and twirl it and then pull it all together and twist it and clip it like a bun in the back....a clip does better than a ponytail bun because with a ponytail it just crimps. but anyway, i'll go to work or school with it like that and let it dry out all day and then take it out when it feels dry and l just go pretty much, sometimes i have to fix a few pieces with my straightener but that's all. anyway i know this has gone on wayyy to long about hair. haha."

So based on this, here's where I am already in the healthy-hair bad zone: I've been coloring mine on a frequent basis since 10th grade (12 years now). I have tried to back off drying it, but I still have to a good bit, AND I straighten it. I'm sure all that heat doesn't help the already weak hair. So, I'm going to try her tips and see how it goes. I'll keep you posted! I'm not sure if any of you have similar hair, but if you do, maybe these tips will help you. Do any of you have great hair or know someone who does? I'm sure you do! Review: Sally Hershberger and Aveda

Hi all. Sorry I haven't posted in forever...been super busy. I wanted to drop two quick reviews on you though.

1. Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam I received this in sample size in my Christmas stocking. This product claims to give lightweight to medium hair volume and shine. I've tried it twice, and I'm not sure I'm applying it 100% correctly. The foam feels slightly sticky in my hair. However, it does smell good (like honey) and my hair is shinier. I wouldn't give it the 5 stars that it's rated on Aveda...maybe 3.5 stars for me.

It's available at Aveda for $18.

2. Sally Hershberger Finishing Cream (in the Wavy Hair product line)

I may have found the product I have been looking for basically my whole life. No joke. In case I never mentioned it...my hair is that strange combo of straight/curly/wavy/whatever it feels like being that day. Which means it usually requires some sort of styling with a straightener or curling iron. That can get old on a day to day basis, especially when I work at home and no one sees me anyway. But I don't want to look like a slob either...anywho I digress. Back to the product. Here's how I use it.
A. Dry hair completely using a flat brush and a big round brush (I use the flat at the beginning and then the round brush to finish).
B. Put a dab of this cream (pea size) on your palms, rub together, and then run through your hair. It smooths down all the kinks and flyaways.
Now the pic below is my results from this morning (not the best quality pic...but it's what I can get with my laptop camera). No curling iron, no straightening iron. Is every piece perfect? No of course not. And it doesn't look like a professional blow-out by any means. But for everyday wear it works for me. Plus, the more natural hair is coming back into style according to all the fashion and beauty mags; and finally it's about to be summer. Stuffy perfect hair just doesn't go with summer!

I got this at Walgreens on clearance for $3.19. Yep. $3.19. Normally it's $12. I don't know if they are no longer selling this at Walgreens, but if they do stop you can get it online at the link above or drugstore.com. The website also says it's available at Ulta, but I haven't gone in there yet to double check. I certainly hope it stays available, because I love it so. :)

Frederic Fekkai

Frederic Fekkai, I may be giving you another chance. After that disastrous sample of Technician Shampoo (hello slimy hair)...I gave a sample of your Glossing Shampoo a try this morning...and I think I like it. My hair feels very soft and dried quickly without a lot of frizz and/or effort with the dryer. It's disgusting weather today, so I can't determine the "glossy" aspect at the moment...but so far I'm happy.

Will post more on this later, gals. A question for you though--what is your fav shampoo? I'm moving back to Baton Rouge swamp water this weekend, so I will have to throw out ALL my shampoo, body wash, and some face products due to the water change. I'm not kidding. It's straight swamp-stuff-never-rinses-out water down there...so any suggestions or favorites to share?

Dandelions and Under My Trench Coat

First, try ever so hard not to be uber-jel of my no makeup-wearin, pageboy hat hair, just got home from a road trip, bad laptop camera look. K? Thx...just pay attention to the products..

So some sweet friends got me Sephora gift cards for my bday in August and I FINALLY spent them last weekend. I got Under my Trench coat...which may be my fave fall nail polish of all time. Seriously. It's kind of gray, kind of khaki and goes with every outfit I wore last week. Every one. I have it on my nails in the pic, hopefully you can see the color...if not I previouslt discussed it here. There's a better pic on the Stephanie's Closet blog. It was $9 at Sephora.

Second, I bought this blush called Dandelion from Benefit. It's actually more of a brightener than a blush. It's very light pink. I had it a year or so ago in a little sample kit from Benefit and have been meaning to replenish it ever since I ran out. So I did! It's nice in the fall because it brightens up skin when things get kind of dull and such out. In the summer it just adds to the normal glow. It's $28 at Sephora, which may seem pricey for blush. But the box actually lasts a long time (my sample size, which was 1/4 the size of this one lasted almost a year!) and it comes with a brush.

I also finally got a small travel size of Living Proof for curly hair to test out. So far the verdict is good. I wore it all week, and my hair stayed pretty wavy and looked decent with little curling iron effort in the morning (I only had to touch up the ends before leaving the house). I don't have a pic at the moment. I recommend buying the travel size if you really want to try this brand (they have straightening stuff too) because it is a little expensive...$14 for the travel size alone. But so far, I'm impressed.

I've been a slacker

Sorry folks. I've been out of pocket lately. I got my new Allure though and I'm SICK in love with these new fall nail polish colors and makeup colors...more to come on that later.

In other news...So big news on the shampoo front...I have bought the same brand twice in a row. Now, for some of you this is no big thing. But for me this is HUGE. I switch shampoos all.the.time. (Remember?) Loreal EverPure. Love it. LOVE it. Makes my hair so nice and smooth without being flat and greasy. AND it's sulfate free/vegan/etc so it's much better for my hair (sulfates dry hair out and fade hair color...and this girl needs to save some $$ and not color as often!). Now, I don't know if everyone has hair like me (wavy, kinky, untamed) but if you do I recommend this brand!

Another brand I'm enjoying these days: Neutrogena Triple Moisture. I have their Pure Strength conditioning treatment and the Silk Touch leave in cream. The conditioner I use about once a week, and it really helps my hair with the constant drying, flat ironing, etc that I do. Smells great too! The smoothing cream both my sister and I have tried, with good results. You put a small amount on dry hair to help tame flyaways. It has UV protection as well, and works well on the ends too that get the worst of the abuse. The best part is the price! Only $6.99 for the conditioner and $6.99 for the cream at Walgreens. A great buy in my opinion!

I heart my hairdresser

I just have to give a shout out to hairdressers out there. I had mine done today, and as usual he made me look fab. So to all the good hairdressers out there and the girls that are wholly devoted fans (like me)...thanks! It's the one thing I haven't been able to bear cutting from my budget. I just gotta pay for the good hair. I tried to just let my hair alone and (gasp) dye it myself like I did back in college when I first started grad school. Annnnnd I felt like crap and self esteem went crashing down--so regular for real hair care was re-instated. Call me shallow, but that's just how it is!!

Speaking of, I've been seeing this Moroccan Oil in every and I mean EVERY mag and website these days. Thinking about buying some here soon--maybe September (I've spent my August beauty and clothing budget already with high school reunion coming up). Anyone tried it? I've tried it in the salon but never for an extended period of time. It's supposed to make hair really silky and shiny. It smells really nice too!

Girl crush and other misc

So I have a confession. I have a serious girl crush on Reese Witherspoon. The August issue of Allure has a one page "fashion stakeout" of her, and she's fab. I pretty much want her hair (in fact, I'm taking her photo in to my hairdresser next week and saying "This this the goal") And I love her style...very simple but so stylish. Now you know about my girl crush. :)

My friend Naz told me about this. It's new at Sephora, and I plan to try it out. It's called Living Proof. It's for fighting dreaded frizz! And for anyone in the humid, humid South...well you know all about this never ending battle.

Now here's the cool part. It was developed by a team led by Dr. Bob Langer at MIT. Now, I am not in tissue engineering, but I have friends at Vanderbilt who are. And he is apparently a super big shot in this area (among others). They are using new molecules to help fight frizz over the old standard silicone, which just weighs your hair down and eventually makes it limp and/or greasy. Sounds like a interesting idea to me!

I think Sephora may be doing some specials or sending out samples right now if you'd like to try it. I will probably try this in the near future, so if I do, I will post results. (Naz's hair looked really good, so at first glance it seems to work!)

So as I said--love your scientist friends and be glad we are so very nerdy. Saving lives and making hair pretty. Gotta love it!!
